Poem_A raindrop

In a noisy world, we move on —

always searching for a quiet place to land.

Joe Hisaishi’s The Rain is a gentle, timely shower.

Each note falls like a raindrop,

tapping softly on the window of the heart,

washing away weariness,

leaving behind a moment of stillness.

What accompanied is “A raindrop,”

a Chinese poem written by Dr. Cheng, one of our Starry Bridge advisors and parents

a continuation of this quiet rain,

this listening,

this return inward.

        是大地,构筑起我的经脉,让我在她的怀抱里奔涌。

我,寻访过高山;

我,依偎过碧野;

我,赞叹高山巍巍;

我,滋润碧野丰沃;

我,依恋高山;

我,依恋碧野;

I Am You — A Raindrop

By Chong Cheng

I was conceived in the ocean.
I was born of the sky.
It was the wind
that carried me down to the earth.

I gathered upon the land.
I grew upon the land.
It was the earth
that shaped my veins
and let me surge within her embrace.

I have searched the mountains.
I have leaned into green fields.
I have challenged the barren plains.

I admired the majesty of the mountains.
I nourished the richness of the fields.
I breathed life into the wastelands.

I grew fond of the mountains.
I grew fond of the fields.
I even grew fond of the plains.

Yet none of you could stop my eastward journey.

I carry the responsibility of life.
I must rush toward the ocean with all my might.
I must bring the earth’s greetings back to the sea.
I must add colors of life and love to this world.

In the instant I return to the ocean,
my mission is fulfilled,
and my life comes to an end.

I have no regret—
for the course of my existence
has already made me eternal
between heaven and earth.

So many “I”s—
and friends begin to ask:
“Then who is this ‘I’?”

My dear friends,
I am right among you.
I am you.

My dear friends,
I am you—
a single raindrop,
an utterly ordinary,
humble raindrop.

Written in New York, late October 1997
as a reflection on life
and a hope offered to humanity.
